New shows- Not original enough?

The Event features mysterious visitors and is trying to be the next LOST.
Nikita is a remake.
Better with You is from a Friends writer and has a laugh track.
The premise of Raising Hope (a single young man having to raise a child) isn't groundbreaking.
The same goes for Running Wilde. (Liberal vs. conservative love premise)

Call us pessimists, but when watching this fall's crop of new shows, we kept thinking, "Have we seen this show before?" It feels like many of the new shows exist to replace old ones. Are we missing something unique or weird about a show? We've been pretty underwhelmed with the ideas for new shows lately.

We suppose Lone Star and Boardwalk Empire are pretty original. But we expect nothing less from HBO, and Lone Star will get canceled if its numbers don't improve.

We know original ideas only carry a show so far, and the real test is whether it's carried out well. But having a premise that is interesting and good to work with can help writers. Is it just us? Are we wrong? How do you feel about the new shows this season?

  1. I agree, but I don't think the situation is dire. This is not a banner year for new shows, but to be fair, last year's new crop was pretty darn good (ABC's Wednesday night line-up, "Glee", "The Good Wife", "V", "Parenthood", "Life Unexpected", "The Vampire Diaries"). "Lone Star" and "Boardwalk Empire" definitely stand out of the bunch in terms of quality, but the others you mentioned were perfectly adequate pilots that probably only need of 6-8 series episodes to find a good rhythm. I also think "Blue Bloods" might turn into a pretty decent cop show. Time will tell, though. Surprise cancellations are only a few episodes away.I really hope people start watching "Lone Star".

  2. You're right that the situation isn't dire. As long as we have The Vampire Diaries and one or two good new shows, we should be happy.

Man, we have GOT to catch up on Parenthood.

  3. That show's awesome. The other one of you should catch up. Thoughts about William Baldwin's guest spot on it? Is he a crap actor or some kind of evil genius?

    1. Maybe later or next season. School is killing us during Feb-March. When it dies down, we might add another show to the list of shows covered weekly.
