hey E&L, I need a recommendation, I'm on vacation and since I'm not inspired by any of this seasons new shows deciding between three old shows that I haven't given a chance yet- Rome, Deadwood, Spartacus. I saw the pilot ep of deadwood and gave up because it was a doom and gloomy- but so many people say this was a great show I'm willing to reconsider... never seen Rome and only started thinking about Spartacus today when i heard that Wentworth Miller is after the lead role. I don't really like violence and gratuitous sex but don't mind it if the characters have redeeming qualities and the writing is good. for example I hate true blood but love SOA. sooo... any thoughts on which show I should watch?
All of these shows have insane amounts of violence and sex. In fact, when this blogger was watching Rome, her roommates had a joke that there was sex on the TV every time they came in the living room. Here are a few thoughts:
Deadwood has lots of cursing, but it's clever. The dialogue in that show is great. It's hard to find people to root for in that show though, and it IS very dark. But the characters are interesting. It's hard to get into, but once you are, it's pretty good.
Rome is really good, but it takes about half a season, and it helps to know the history of what was going on at that time. If you are into the subject of ancient Rome at all, you will like it. The cast is pretty perfet, especially the women. Season two moves really fast, so that's nice.
Spartacus is more just dumb fun. We don't really like it, but we haven't seen more than a few episodes.
Out of the three, we would say Rome, but we would find it hard to wholeheartedly recommend any of these three shows.
well, maybe my first impression of these shows was right. after reading your comments I decided to pass on all of them! but I checked out the pilot of Harpers Island and it looks pretty good- I wold have tuned in long ago if I new that Auggie (covert affiars) was the lead!
thanks for answering; you probably saved me from a futile effort to like one of those shows :)
Ha! Good. We were worried about you trying those three shows. We enjoy two of them, but we don't know too many other people who would. Harper's is just fun. One of us doesn't like the end twist much/predicted a lot of it, but that blogger still loves the series.

Oh, the violence in Deadwood and Rome is quick and dirty. The violence in Spartacus is drawn out and gratuitous.
