Contagion ... In which Gwyneth Paltrow Ruins More Than a Glee Episode

Contagion is a movie about what realistically would happen if there were a huge disease outbreak, killing millions in the modern world. There are no zombies or supernatural elements. There is some gore, but it’s really not as scary as you would think. Some were too disturbed by the trailer and the idea of the movie to go, but we think that’s a mistake. It's a lot like the beginning of The Stand by Stephen King, only better (because we all know the 2nd half of that book was the superior half).

There were some intense moments, but we wouldn’t call it a thriller. It’s just intelligent and interesting. We think this was falsely advertised as a scary and super-exciting. We kind of wish it had been more disturbing and edge-of-your-seat. Unless you have a germ phobia, you'll go back to your life as usual, worry-free, within five minutes. But the movie is good and never boring.

The movie has a great cast, as you probably know. Contagion is well-paced and entertaining, and while you don’t spend much time with each character, the time you get counts. It’s like Love Actually, only with disease instead of Christmas and romance, haha. It’s not all doom-and-gloom though, and it didn’t leave us feeling scared or depressed. We liked it, but we wish the trailers didn’t give us such a wrong idea of what we were going to see.

Movie Grade: B+

  1. I can't wait for this to come out in the UK! It looks like a less cheesy version of 'Outbreak'. These kinds of movies a such a guilty pleasure.

Did you see that Vulture article on Gwyneth's "ugly death" in that movie, and how it could potentially help her image problem? (http://nymag.com/daily/entertainment/2011/09/gwyneth_paltrow_dying_ugly.html) I've got no beef with her, but people **hate** her!

  2. Ern likes her, but Leeard hates her. It's the privilege thing. People see her as stuck up. We respect her for dying such an ugly death in that movie. It was ballsy to let people show her looking that awful. You rarely see a famous actress' scalp peeled off. They use unknowns for that stuff.

  3. I haven't seen the movie (and probably won't) but there were a couple of scenes filmed in the town next to me, which is super exciting because I live in the Chicago 'burbs. Doesn't happen very often. So almost everyone I know saw it because they wanted to glimpse our town... and you could totally tell :D

Side note: I never cared one way or another about Gweneth Paltrow until she came out as a "country singer" and tried to steal the show on Glee. Now I think she's an attention whore who isn't REALLY all that talented.

  4. We think she's a talented actress and a mediocre singer. Also, that's cool.

  5. Also, we completely understand that reason for seeing a movie. The Happening was partially filmed by this blogger's hometown, so she went to see it the day it came out. That's the only reason to see that movie haha
