We watched the Christmas episode where we found out that Jane was a "Christmas Baby," but we were too lazy to write anything about it here. Mostly because our thoughts amounted to: cute premise, funny episode. Not worth logging onto the blog to write that. This week, TWO episodes of Happy Endings aired. One was on the regular day and the other was on Sunday for Lord knows what reason. Maybe the network is trying to get more people to watch the show. Not many people have heard of it, and it's the most underrated comedy on right now. It doesn't even have a vocal cult like Community and Cougar Town do.
So the question is: Did Sunday night's episode bring forth the kind of material that could bring non-watchers of this show to the tube regularly? Probably not. This show has a tendency to have scenes that are too manic and cartoonish. They are going for clever, zany, and energetic. Most of the time this show gets what it wants, but sometimes it fails. The first five minutes of the Sunday episode grated on our nerves, and we're sure people who don't know that this show is actually GOOD changed the channel too soon.
The episode in questione featured Alex going to a rom-com con, Jane and Dave trying to find a new guy for Max, and Brad and Penny killing Alex's racist parrot, Tyler. It featured nice Scandal and Frasier references, and we laughed at the "cartoonish parrot-shaped hole" in the window screen. Come on, it's Alex. That would totally fool her. Max came off looking cool, so people looking for a non-stereotypical, funny gay character should be pleased. But we think the show wasted its Sunday night opportunity, for the most part.
So should the network have swapped Sunday's outing with last night's? Yeah, probably. We loved Max's journey to figure out what kind of gay he was, and we also loved the pop star plotline. We thought Brad and Dave were the weak links this week, but even their gender stereotype plot managed to undercut the stereotypes. We hope they use the new gay character sparingly and poor Max finds someone funny to date.

They are airing on Sundays because DWTS results is getting the Happy Endings/Don't Trust the B time slot staring in March. The network is burning off the extra episodes of both shows by airing them on Sundays and Tuesdays.
ReplyDeleteThat makes sense. Still, it's a good way to get Sunday viewers who don't know this show exists. I feel like a lot of people don't know about it.
