The Vampire Diaries- season 4, episode 9

We're just going to ignore Elena's sire bond for most of this post. It's not romantic, it leads to sexist places, it's a cop-out, it cheapens the show's relationships, and it's boring. It's dragging down the show, hard. Now Stefan is all mad because Damon didn't break things off right away, but Damon ends up doing it at the end of this episode, blah blah blah, we don't give a scheiste (that's Ern's made-up German word that Leeard hates). It's time to end the triangle. We know they won't.

It's getting crazy how many events this town has. It's starting to really annoy us. These people must really like to party. We're extremely glad all those hybrids are dead so that we don't have to see them anymore. Their quest to free themselves of Klaus wasn't a point of interest for us. Hayley's betrayal is much better. Oh, Mrs. Lockwood is dead? Boo-frickety-hoo. We saw that coming a mile away, and no one cares about that character.

Shane, evil witch, trying to get access to some great magic is more interesting to us than most of what's going on. As sweet as it was that Jeremy loves Bonnie, we still want to see her with Damon. We want to see her go Bad Witch too. We liked April Young being impossible to compel, due to jewelry. If we get Rebekah back because of April, we'll be extra happy.

We don't like what this season is doing with Jeremy and Elena. Magic should be a tool characters use to further their own goals; it should not be the thing that gives them goals. Fantasy only works when main characters still have free will. You can't have magic forcing them to do things, changing who they are, or totally controlling them. In order for stakes to be real, characters have to have their own decisions. When they make bad decisions, it has to be because they are real people, not because they have an excuse and are really perfect underneath it all.

Episode grade: B (because at least there was lots of action)

  1. I thought this episode was good. Not great, but good. Agreed about the sire bond thing. I hate it & it kinda makes Damon seem rapey. Just let them be together without all this crazy magic. Not really buying that Jeremy suddenly doesn't want to kill Elena. I think that'll come back. Yeah for Rebekah coming back! To me she is one of the most interesting characters. Up there with Caroline

    1. I'm still Team Stefan. In fact, the accidental rapeyness has made me more Team Stefan.
