Game of Thrones, season 3, episodes 1-2
This show always starts each season off slow, because it's based on books and most books build to climaxes. The first two episodes were fine and beautiful and got us pumped for the rest of the season. The second one was a little dull and uneventful, but we're loving Cersei losing her influence and feeling backed into a corner. As people who have read the book this season will be based on, we assure you that this will probably be the best season of this show.
If you're not into it yet or if you're behind, fix that fast. The spoilers in this season will be brutal. It's eventful. Move away from readers. Also, for those of you who are singing "Jaime sucks, he lost to a girl," a) you're an asshole and b) he spent the last year sitting in his own poop and he was chained up and c) Brienne is huge and bad ass. It's not a dishonor to lose to a female bad ass. Or any female. Valar Dohaeris grade: B+, Dark Wings Dark Words grade: B-
Bates Motel, season 1, episode 1
We only watched the pilot of this show. We wanted to give it a chance because we love Vera Farmiga and feel like she would make a good choice. We wondered why Psycho needed a modern-day premise at all, but we went with it. It was surprisingly good, but it wasn't for us. Vera has the best and most interesting role. She's a smart, strong, crazy mother of a son with some obvious issues. There was an awful rape scene that soured us on the whole thing. We hate those, by and large, and this one was especially nasty. If you're interested at all, check it out. We're gonna wait for the news from the grapevine before we pick it up again. Vera, you're still fantastic. Episode grade: B
The Walking Dead, season 3, episodes 9-16
This show never takes anyone away from us who the fans aren't kind of ready to lose. Shane. Lori. Dale. Merle. Andrea. All unpopular. We defend Andrea though. She really was just trying to keep the peace (and get some booty on the side). If you're a hated character on The Walking Dead, whether the hate is justified or not, you are gone. We'd kind of like the show to kill off someone fans really like, just to show it has some cojones.
We thought that, for the exciting set-up this season had, it turned out a little anti-climactic. We're glad The Governor is still alive though. He brought some great action. Overall, this was the best season of this show, but we've always felt like it could be better, so that's not saying much. We can't wait for next year. We like where the show is taking Rick and Carl. We hope Glenn lightens up though.
The Suicide King: B, Home: B+, I Aint No Judas: B+, Clear: B+, Arrow on the Doorpost: B+, Prey: A-, This Sorrowful Life: A, Welcome to the Tombs: A-

I've been slowly catching up on the Walking Dead, I stopped towards the beginning of season 2, and I'm now midway through season 3. The adventure game from last year became one of my favourite games of the year, and recaptured my interest in the universe, even though there's not much overlap between the two.
ReplyDeleteI don't recall hearing if either of you play computer games at all, but if you have any interest I'd highly recommend playing through The Walking Dead, and it's currently 60% off on Steam. It's not perfect in many ways, but its strengths far out weigh its flaws in my opinion. It makes you care about the characters, especially with one of the best child characters in the history of entertainment and the drama is more compelling when you're in the middle of it instead of just watching. Just whatever you do, remain spoiler free, a lot of the strength of the game comes from making your own choices, without knowing what is and isn't important.
I used to play computer and video games, but I quit a few years ago. They just took over my life. That's cool though. Sometimes games can get stories and characters better than the filmed versions (Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic was a perfect example. Why wasn't THAT the Star Wars prequel?)
