Smash- Season 2, Episodes 1-10

You wouldn't know it from this blog, but we've been watching Smash's second season. Last year, we heard that Smash was going to be completely overhauled, its kinks worked out, and its level of quality raised. There have certainly been a lot of changes, especially in the cast. There's no more Leo, Julia's husband with the kick ass singing voice didn't even get to sing before he left, and there's no more Ellis or Dev, thank God. Most of these characters were dragging down the stories anyway.

Jennifer Hudson and a Newsies alum have joined the show, even though Jennifer was only around for a couple of episodes so far. They brought back Bernadette Peters by making her a Bombshell cast member. Her character is awful, but we like Bernadette.

There are now two musicals to work on. One is a Spring Awakening/Rent-style indie starring Karen Cartwright, with Derek direction. The other is the Monroe musical. We love this. Marilyn was a boring subject for this show, and now it gets to create its own musical. We've loved at least two of the songs so far. We love that Ivy is the new, permanent Marilyn.

We're disappointed that Julia's new script isn't getting performed because we know all too well the perils of a good musical not making it because it's too smart. We loved Ragtime. It's a darn shame Broadway often plays to the lowest common denominator.

Things we hate: We hate that this show keeps doing songs that Glee has already done, like Don't Dream It's Over. It's not even a good audition song! We also hate that Karen's new love interest is probably an addict. We're over smart women thinking that getting with troubled guys is a good move. You can't change people. Jimmy's rebellion against Derek and "see, I KNEW no one was honest" attitude is getting reeeeal old, real fast.

Overall, the changes are good, but this show has yet to reach the A-levels it achieved in the pilot (or that we'd hoped for when we first saw the trailer for this show). The fat has been cut. Now all the show needs is time to get on with some plots. It probably won't get that time. The ratings are terrible and the show has been moved to SATURDAYS. That's a death knell. Hopefully this show can give us some closure before it gets the axe. We kind of care. Kind of. About everyone except boring Karen.
