Falling Skies

Now that the two-hour premiere and a second episode have aired, we feel ready to give an opinion on this show. The premise is not unlike that of V, a show we constantly panned on this blog. There are no politics and playing nice though, which is fine with us, because there is just action. This sort of reminds us of V meets The Walking Dead. It’s apocalyptic, there is a group of survivors, a racist guy challenges them, and people need to be rescued. It’s not as horrifying or gory as either show though.

Aliens have taken over and are kidnapping and controlling children. An ex-professor (Noah Wyle, finally escaping crap like The Librarian 2) wants to get his son back, has two other sons and a dead wife, and his joined with a group of rebels. The people on the show are dirty, but attractive. The pacing is slower than you would hope, but it’s already more entertaining than V. It’s not nerdy enough for us so far. If you bring in aliens, we want some serious nerd stuff. It’s surprisingly good for TNT.

Another good thing? We already care about the characters and parent-child relationships more than we did with V. Much more. We’re not sure if this is saying much, since there wasn’t a single person on V that we could give a flip about. Falling Skies also suffers from lame special effects, probably due to budget constraints.

Our bottom line on this right now is that the show is not bad. We would not yet recommend it to people with confidence though. Check it out if you want.

  1. It's awful, absolutely terrible. Apart from the production errors, such as the main character, a professor of military history, standing in front of a war memorial that's obviously in Canada due to the dates on the inscription, Falling Skies is failing in all the ways that other series like 'The Event' 'Flash Forward' and 'V' have, by trying to incorporate a soap opera element into the storyline so that it can broaden its appeal.

Some people like science fiction, and a different group of people likes soap opera...very few people like both and will therefore watch a series which is a combination of the two.

I watched the first episode online; and that was enough for me.

  2. Heard it was awful so I gave it a pass. Might check it out when it comes to Netflix on Bluray. So little time, so many shows...got to choose and pick what I watch, and it's just not interesting enough for me to do that right now.

  3. It got better on the second week. But the first week was hard to like, yeah. Most people tuned out after that.

We realize here that the pilots are for the networks and subsequent episodes are for the audience. The networks like dumb and formulaic.

We don't disagree with Lee's comment as a whole, but we do disagree that sci-fi people don't like "soap opera" elements in a show. LOST had plenty of human elements and romantic drama, and nerds loved that.

And Jim, that sounds like a good plan. We will let you know at the end of the season if it is even worth renting.

  4. I'm one of the few who likes the show. It has cheesy moments but they aren't that annoying to me. I like how the story is going and getting answers as we go along. (it doesn't feel as if it's going to take a long time to get those answers...) I wouldn't consider it "quality" or put it in a top/best list but it is enjoyable for me to watch. (I would even say it's better then most movies that come out..although not the best of the best movies that do come out)

Also, people should know that Falling Skies was in production before The Walking Dead (though The Walking Dead comics existed a while back)

Like Ern and Leeard, I wouldn't recommend the show just yet...but for the summer with the not so much tv programs, I'd say watch it at least until Breaking Bad returns on the same time slot. (I'll be able to watch both and help move the ratings..since I get the east feed for AMC. :D )I'm probably just being positive for couple of reasons.

  5. BREAKING BAD!!!!!!

Ok, had to get that out. But you’re in more company than you think. Falling Skies is doing well in the ratings.

  6. Cool. Falling Skies has been renewed. I was sort of surprised since the ratings dropped the second week and slightly dropped the third week. I was expecting them to wait a while more to see how low the show can go..still cool. :) Something to watch next Summer again. (with the quality hopefully improving)

  7. Yayyy. One thing that's nice about that show is that it's pretty clean. You can watch it with the family, if your kids are above the age of nightmares.

The ratings are still the best cable ratings of the summer. Hopefully now that it's been renewed, the station will throw more money at it so the special effects aren't so abysmal.

  8. Yeah, it's pretty nice as a family drama. (which doesn't feel totally dumbed down)

You guys should check out Men of a Certain Age (If you haven't yet...and I already know you guys watch and love Southland.) I don't know about the quality of the other shows on TNT...but those two are really good dramas.

  9. We have not checked out Men of a Certain Age, but we've heard it's good. We weren't interested when it premiered, but the buzz has built and we are nearing interest. Thanks for the reminder.
