Mad Men Finale Approaches - Is one blogger wrong to hate the show?

You might have noticed a lack of Mad Men coverage on this blog, even though it's supposedly such a popular show. Why? Because one blogger hates it, and the other blogger is far from being caught up. But we thought, due to its acclaim and popularity, we would mention it, because the finale is tomorrow night.

Why does one blogger hate it? For these reasons:
1) Glacial pacing. The aforementioned blogger made it through LOST with no impatience at all. Ever. All the plotlines are so slow-moving.
2) All the cads. Cheating, sleezy guys just aren't that interesting. This blogger doesn't care how messed up Don Draper's past was. He is a ho-bag, this blogger doesn't go for the "bad boys," and there are too many guys like this in life and on TV for it to be edgy anymore. Maybe it's a great fantasy for some guys, being so successful and cool at work and having many women, but it just doesn't do it for the rest of us.
3) Mad Men is obsessed with pointing out how racist and sexist America was in the '60s, allowing us to look down upon the past with the benefit of our politically correct hindsight. Have we really come that far? Don Draper was AskMen.com’s most influential man a while back. When Don Draper is idealized as an example of manhood, we have to wonder how far we’ve really come.
4) The actress playing Betty can't act at all, and Don Draper is so stiff. No, not that way, you sickos.

BUT both bloggers like the style/visuals, and we love Christina Hendricks for bringing that real woman’s body back into fashion. Also, this blogger didn't get very far into the show. Being bored to tears by the first couple of episodes and not hearing anything about the show in subsequent years that would draw her back in, this blogger might not have given it a chance. The blogger who likes the show doesn't like it enough to be watching over Chuck, Glee, The Vampire Diaries, and random Disney fare on Instant Netflix.
We are wondering if we should both catch up on this show when we are on winter break or if our first impressions were correct. Are we wrong? Are we taking Mad Men's attributes out of the context of the whole show?

  1. I think I've told you before - I have tried and failed several times to get into this show. Let me know if it really is all it's cracked up to be.

But yes, the styling is amazing.

  2. We'll keep you posted if we ever actually get around to it. We are less than enthused at the idea. It's just boring!!!

  3. I didn't know where to leave this but.. I think you should do Desperate Housewives. The new season is just starting here in England but I love to know the spoilers lol, would be great to find out what you guys think of the show in advance.

BTW, I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS SITE. :)

  4. ^Thanks! We haven't watched Desperate Housewives since the end of season one. We thought it got a lot worse in season 2. Maybe we could be caught up by next season though, because we heard it's good again. We hate to review shows we aren't caught up with, because that's just not fair. But we can post spoilers if we hear of a really juicy one.

  5. you know what, I don't think DH is a show that you need to watch all the seasons of. there is progress but each season is kind of a self contained story. I do think the show is getting 'good again' but my guess is that by the time you watch all of seasons 1-5(?) you will have had enough and won't want to watch the new eps....

btw- i'm liking harpers (mostly b/c i like the cast) but its too creepy (and a little campy) for a marathon viewing, so, if you should have an inspiration for a recommendation send it my way....:)

  6. HA. We love campy...when it fits the subject. We'll keep our eyes open for something. Right now, one of us is watching HBO's Carnivale, and it's good so far (two episodes in).

  7. yeah, campy is fine, Im just not up for thirteen hours of it:) I've heard that Carnivale is really good...maybe I'll watch dark angel, I only tuned in for Jensen Ackles and Rainn Wilson's apearences...

  8. Never saw Dark Angel. Leeard might have....if she has, she'll comment, haha.

Carnivale, so far, is really good if you like mystery, creepiness, and supernatural stuff. It's actually mildly respectful of religion too, surprisingly.

  9. Leeard has seen Dark Angel. She enjoyed the first season, but it wasn't appointment television, so she stopped watching after that. She did enjoy Michael Weatherly, though :)

She actually thinks that Harper's Island is perfect for a marathon (well, a 2-part marathon). Leeard thought it was campy, but also suspenseful enough that she kept wanting to watch.

  10. Ern cannot fairly attest to Harper's Island's merit as a marathon show, because she marathoned it while studying for contracts (alternating reading a chapter and watching half an episode). Just about anything would be a sweet relief after contracts, and contracts broke up the campiness by being really really dull.
