Modern Family- The Old Wagon Review

If you didn’t get the hint from the Emmy Award wins that you should watch Modern Family, consider this another bulletin. This show is funny. This show is sweet. This show is possibly the best comedy on TV right now. The premiere continued in the vein of last season, with more one-liners and chuckles in one 22-minute episode than most comedies have in three.

This episode chronicled Mitchell and Cam trying to build a backyard princess castle for their adopted daughter. Cam’s dad helped out, and Mitchell tried to keep Cam away from the project without insulting him, because Cam is terrible with tools.
Meanwhile, Claire got Phil to try to sell their old car, but then she got choked up because of all the memories the car and its contents invoked. Phil tried to take the family out on a trip like the family used to take in that car when everyone was younger. It was a funny disaster, but the end was sweet. Gloria got jealous when Manny brought home a little girlfriend who was convincing Manny to listen to her suggestions, rather than his mother’s. It’s a testament to the Gloria character and portrayal that Gloria came across as endearing and funny during this plotline.

We are going to start putting salt in our chocolate milk.

  1. Honestly I expected more from the premiere - it was funny, but I wasn't laughing out loud. I still LOVE this show though, and can't wait for more.

  2. That's why we gave it a minus. But after all the wins and expectations, I don't think there was any way the show could "win." Modern Family is great because the humor is low key. It's not loud and over-the-top like "The Office." We were afraid that all the attention would pressure the show into changing and trying too hard. We were glad to see it's just the same as ever.
